The United States and Spain wrap up a week of basketball in Puerto Rico with their final game in FIBA World Cup qualifying Tuesday.
Both teams have nailed down spots in the World Cup, which will be held in Berlin this fall, so Tuesday’s finale is about national pride and players trying to impress the coaches ahead of final roster selection.
Team USA has breezed through its first four games in San Juan, winning by an average of 49 points per game and getting everyone on the roster plenty of playing time. In her national team debut, Caitlin Clark leads Team USA with an average of 12.8 points in 20.9 minutes per game, just ahead of Rhyne Howard (12.5 ppg) and Paige Bueckers (11).
Spain should pose the toughest test the USA has faced so far. The Spaniards plowed through their first three games before falling to Italy on Sunday and have some intriguing talent on their roster. That includes Megan Gustafson of the Las Vegas Aces, the top scorer in San Juan so far at 14.5 points per game, and 19-year-old Awa Fam, who could be the top overall pick in this year’s WNBA Draft.
