It is the big one today with Sunderland v Newcastle United Women at the Stadium of Light.

Newcastle United Women having defeated the Mackems 3-1 at St James’ Park back in November.

United are on a six game unbeaten run and with four games remaining, have put themselves in a great position in the promotion race.

Newcastle United Women manager Tanya Oxtoby speaking ahead of the derby: “We are still in the promotion race and we have our destiny in our own hands, which is where we want it to be. I think you have got to embrace big games because that’s the reason we play football. So there’s an element of enjoying and embracing the occasion, but it’s also about getting the balance to ensure we control our performance.”

The United boss going on to say: “They (travelling Newcastle United fans) will be massive for us on Sunday. At all of our away games, I’m blown away by their support, and this weekend will be no different. We’ll try our very best to make sure we put in a performance they can be proud of.”

This season, the top two in the second tier go up automatically to the Women’s Super League, whilst the team that finishes third will go into a play-off against whoever ends up bottom in the top tier.
