Solo Developer Danilec Launches a Steam Demo for Leonardo’s Island

Prepare for Some Naval Warfare in Leonardo’s Island

Danilec, a solo developer, has launched the Steam demo for Leonardo’s Island, a naval sandbox where ship design directly affects performance at sea. The game challenges players to think like engineers rather than simply captains. Add one more cannon, and your ship might gain firepower but lose the speed needed to win a race.

Leonardo's Island

Unlike traditional naval titles that rely on pre-built vessels, Leonardo’s Island puts full control in the player’s hands. Every structural choice carries consequences. Hull width influences maneuverability and cargo capacity. Different sail types respond uniquely to changing wind angles. Cannons vary in firing arc, reload speed, and weight. Even ammunition matters, as heavier rounds deliver greater penetration but add to the overall load.

Build too heavy, and your ship accelerates slowly and struggles against the wind. Build too light, and a single hull breach could send you to the bottom. Customization goes far beyond cosmetics; it fundamentally shapes how a ship sails, turns, and fights.

The demo includes three light hull types, four sail types with distinct wind-efficiency angles, two cannon types, and two ammunition options: cannonballs and chain shots. Players can test their designs across multiple modes. Battle Mode focuses on tactical naval combat. Regatta Mode rewards sailing skill and efficient builds. “Around the Island” offers a sandbox space for experimentation. Steam Friends mode enables online play.

The demo also introduces a progression system that unlocks new components and upgrades. The full release will expand the arsenal with ten sails, five cannons, additional hull types, and more ammunition options.
