With the clocks changing soon and the sun making an appearance once more, many of us are keen to head back outside as soon as possible. But one challenge garden fans often find after a long, wet and cold winter is their lawn looking rather worse for wear.

It’s a problem I encounter every spring, with a lack of sunlight leaving my grass looking pretty sad. However, it’s easily solved with some grass seed – and I’ve uncovered an eye-catching deal that means there’s away to pick up a 1.5kg box for less than £1.

The Verve family and sport grass seed mix typically costs £16 to buy at B&Q. But there’s a little known deal that will actually effectively bring the price down to 73p.

It comes via the money-saving website TopCashback, where new members benefit from a £15 sign-up cashback bonus when they spend £15 at a participating retailer. That means that for new TopCashback members and all B&Q customers the price will work out at 73p, once cashback is applied.

B&Q says the box has an average total coverage area of 60m² and is “durable and hard wearing”. Young grass should begin sprouting within one to two weeks, while the non perennial ryegrass mixtures can take 14-21 days.

Reviews left to date have mainly been very positive. One said: “Bought this to patch in areas where the dogs have been running. Spreads well, noticed growth about two weeks later so really happy.”

Another continued: “Great coverage and good growth. Great colour and time to germinate was shorter than the box said. We’ve given it three cuts and it looks good. Versatile for dogs and kids.”

A third went on: “Excellent seed, took around 6 days to germinate and now we have a lovely lawn.” Meanwhile another added: “This grass seed is great quality and very fast growing. Highly recommend and worked out at a good price compared to other brands.”

Despite the majority of the feedback being positive, there were a few drawbacks flagged, including one buyer who said they were “very disappointed with the result”. Another deducted stars, saying they were “waiting for results”.

There are plenty of other grass seed options out there too, including on Amazon where a 1.4kg box of Pronto Seed, offering 84m² coverage is £14.49. That’s said to be “durable” for areas getting a lot of foot traffic and safe for dogs and cats.

Elsewhere, Wickes stocks Gro-Sure’s Shady Lawn Seed that’s designed for areas that don’t get much sunlight. However, a 300g £9 box only covers 10m², so it’s pricier than standard seeds.
