A popular food stand tied to Beyoncé’s family briefly shut down operations at one of Texas’ biggest events after health officials raised concerns over compliance issues. Mama Tina’s Gumbo, owned by Tina Knowles, has become the subject of online speculation after it had to close earlier this week. So what violations did the stand incur?
Beyoncé Family Recipe Adds a Dash of Controversy as Mama Tina’s Gets Shut Down Over Health Violations Mama Tina’s Gumbo made its debut at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in early March 2026, and it quickly garnered widespread attention both locally and online due to its connection to the pop star. It didn’t take long before the booth became one of the rodeo’s most talked-about attractions, with long lines of visitors eager to try the Creole dish that has been part of the Knowles family for decades.
However, the buzz took a sudden turn when the Houston Health Department temporarily shut down the stand earlier in the week. Officials cited issues related to permitting and food safety compliance, including discrepancies between the business’s permit application and the way food was being prepared on site.
According to reports, inspectors also raised concerns about storage practices and the inability to verify that proper cooling procedures were being followed for pre-cooked gumbo. As a precaution, all gumbo on site was discarded during the inspection.
The closure came after a complaint circulated on social media, with one individual claiming they became ill after eating the dish. While officials did not confirm any direct link between the complaint and the shutdown, the allegation added to the scrutiny surrounding the vendor.

Before the shutdown, Mama Tina’s Gumbo had already been drawing significant crowds. The gumbo, reportedly a labour-intensive recipe that takes hours to prepare, was marketed as a family staple that Beyoncé grew up eating. The combination of celebrity appeal and traditional Southern cooking made it one of the standout food attractions at the rodeo.
Online reactions to the temporary closure have been mixed. Some social media users expressed concern over food safety, while others defended the business and pointed out that temporary shutdowns for compliance checks are not uncommon at large public events.
From Setback To Comeback: Mama Tina’s Reopens Despite the setback, the closure was short-lived. Rodeo organisers confirmed that Mama Tina’s worked closely with health authorities to address the issues. The stand was shut down on Monday and reopened by Wednesday after meeting the necessary requirements and receiving approval to resume operations.
In a statement, organisers of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo emphasised that all vendors must comply with city regulations, including health and safety standards. They also stressed that Knowles worked with them to get things sorted as soon as possible.
‘To our knowledge, Mama Tina’s has been cooperative with the City of Houston Health Department and has worked closely with them to address the identified clerical issues,’ the statement read. ‘Mama Tina’s has since reopened under the guidance of the Houston Health Department.’
