UDA Senator Goes After IG Kanja Over Nandi Hills Police Brutality

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has called on the Senate to summon Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja over a recent directive involving six senior police commanders, following a brutal assault at a Nandi Hills pool joint earlier this month.

Kanja gave the green light for administrative action against the police commander in a statement on Saturday, following investigations and recommendations by the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU).

The IG did not reveal what administrative action has been taken, but ordinarily the actions include interdiction or suspension, transfer or redeployment, warning or reprimand, loss of rank, salary stoppage, or, in the worst case, dismissal from service.

In a statement on Saturday, January 31, the lawmaker said that the officers who were involved in the incidents, as well as their superiors, should be arrested and prosecuted.

Cherargei said that once the Kanja, as well as the leadership of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) appears before the senate, they will be required to explain why they have not taken any substantial action against the individuals.

“The canning and brutalization of young men playing pool at Nandi Hills Town, Nandi County, are criminal actions worth arrests and prosecution as per the criminal law,” Cherargei said.

“We need immediate arrest and prosecution of the said police officers plus their superiors who committed the acts of criminality by beating up youth playing pool who had not committed any offence,” he added.

The senator claims that the recent directive was a ‘cheap’ public relations act, and the internal affairs unit and IPOA should review their recommendations.

On the other hand, the senator has noted that  NPS and IPOA should also launch a probe and take action against the alleged police brutality in Tinderet constituency.

“These cheap public relations acts will not be accepted until arrests and prosecution are done. The least we expected was recommendations by the internal affairs unit to recommend arrests and prosecution,” Cherargei said.

“To IPOA, we didn’t expect this shenanigans of public relations exercise while the victims continue to experience trauma and undergo medical recovery,” he added.

Kanja gave the directive two weeks after a disturbing eight-minute CCTV video emerged showing uniformed officers beating young men at a pool hall on January 10, 2026.

The police boss called for action against the Sub-County Police Commander for Tinderet and the Officer Commanding Station for Songoh and his counterpart at Nandi Hills Police Station.

Others who are facing the administrative crackdown include the Officer in Charge of RDU Songoh Camp, GSU Songoh Camp, and ASTU Songoh Camp.

“This action deliberately focuses on local commanders to ensure they are held fully accountable for all conduct within their jurisdictions,” stated the NPS statement.
